Co-ops as a Community Solution: My Commitment to Affordable Childcare in the 5th District

Hello Neighbor,

One of the most pressing concerns I hear from people across this district is the high cost of living, particularly when it comes to childcare. Time and again, parents share how the exorbitant cost of childcare makes it difficult for them to work as much as they'd like, forces one parent to stay out of the workforce, or leaves single parents with no choice but to dedicate their entire paycheck to care for their kids.

Antonia and I have some of the exact same challenges. With six children we’ve had to crunch the numbers to see what made the most sense for our situation and it’s only because we were mostly self employed that we were able to make things work. Many families don’t have such flexibility.

This is a major challenge for families struggling to make ends meet in our community.

As a candidate for 5th District Supervisor, I'm deeply committed to strengthening child care co-ops as a solution to this pressing issue. Co-ops offer an affordable, community-based model for quality early childhood education that can be a game-changer for working parents. By prioritizing support and resources for these co-ops, I believe we can make a real difference in helping families across the 5th District access the childcare they need to thrive.

If elected, I will advocate for increased funding for child care programs and co-ops in the county budget. This will ensure these vital community resources have the support they need to thrive. I'll also work to streamline licensing processes and provide tax incentives to make it easier to establish and operate child care co-ops.

Beyond funding, I'll leverage county resources to offer training and professional development opportunities for early childhood educators involved in co-ops. Investing in our child care workforce is key to delivering high-quality care. I'll also facilitate partnerships between co-ops and local organizations to secure additional support and resources.

Community engagement will be a cornerstone of my approach. I'll host meetings to discuss child care needs and promote the benefits of the co-op model. I'll use my platform to raise awareness and encourage participation from families. And I'll work to integrate co-ops with the broader network of family support services in the area.

I believe this can make a real difference for struggling families in the 5th District. Access to affordable, quality child care is essential for parents to participate in the workforce and provide for their loved ones. I'm committed to leveraging all the resources at my disposal to build a stronger child care infrastructure and support working families across our community.

In Community, always.
